Tips for Setting Objectives
What does the Internet have to offer that's unique?
Consider the unique characteristics of the Internet - such as the ability to conduct financial transactions, to interact and communicate with customers, to gather information about your customers - their likes, dislikes, profiles and preferences. Ideally, you want to determine how the Internet is different from other mediums and consider the ways your can use those unique characteristics to improve your business processes, customer service and sales.
What is your core business and how can a website benefit?
Clearly define whom and what your business does, then identify ways that your website can add to your core business. It's helpful to make a list of what you'd like your website to do, then put that list in order of priority. Look at what you'd like the end result to be, and consider the steps necessary to get you there.
Who will be visiting your site?
Consider the various audiences that will visit your site -- for example, consumers, suppliers, media, distributors, retailers, investors -- and determine the many messages you'll need to convey.
What are your resources?
Finally, your objectives need to reflect realistic capabilities as opposed to pie-in-the-sky dream weaving. You need to realistically consider your resources -- human and otherwise. Seriously ask yourself, "What is my business capable of delivering, and what am I willing to commit to".
