Inspirations
I recently read a book called The Songlines, by Bruce Chatwin (1942-1989). His story takes readers into the Outback of Australia where he shares the meaning of the Aboriginal "Songlines."
A common Aboriginal belief was that all goods were potentially bad and would work against their possessors if not passed on or traded. The "goods" did not have to be of value, they were more like tokens of intent: to meet again, intermarry, sing, dance, exchange resources and share ideas.
Although possessions were traded, the principal reason behind trade was not to exchange goods; it was to exchange songs. The songs were part of what defined a person -- the clan they belonged to, the place they had come from and the road they had traveled. The routes traveled were the "Songlines."
Song verses were passed down through ancestral clans, and it was imperative that they be sung in exact order as the verses also represented title deeds to territory. No one in Australia was landless, as everyone inherited a stretch of the ancestor's song and the stretch of country over which the song passed. One could lend their song to others, or borrow other verses in return, but they could never be sold or got rid of.
After reading The Songlines, I began to conceptualize the Internet as being made up of Songlines, where people of like interests go on a surfabout (walkabout) along pathways and congregate. Goods are exchanged, but the principal reason for traveling is not to exchange goods, but rather to communicate and exchange stories. The "goods" are merely tokens of intent: to meet again, fix frontiers, exchange resources and share ideas.
